Description of SNP MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase):
The MTHFR gene plays a crucial role in the methylation cycle. It helps to pull homocysteine into the cycle, serving to aid in keeping the levels in a normal healthy range. Several mutations in the MTHFR gene have been well characterized as increasing the risk of heart disease, as well as cancer, and may play a role in modulating the level of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.
