A Few Words from Dr. Amy Yasko:

I’m very excited about the plans for this summer’s conference. As I mentioned last week on our message board this is not going to be your traditional conference. I have listened to what people are looking for from me at a conference. Based on your prior feedback I understand that what you are looking for is time with me, to ask questions, to share your files, to come as close to a personal appointment with me as possible within the scope of a conference. So that is what we are going to do. Of course we will have PPT presentations so that new data can be shared, we have some unique ideas about raising awareness for recovery during the conference, and raising money for some worthy autism organizations. It is also not just about autism. Especially as more and more of you are seeing your children reach the finish line to recovery it is time for you to start to concentrate on yourselves or the other children in your household. The genetics come from somewhere. And while I do not believe that autism is due to a single genetic mutation, I do feel that there is a predisposing genetic component that makes us susceptible to autism, CFS, SLE, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, etc. In fact I will present literature that supports this fact. Bottom line…whether you are looking for guidance for your child who is still on the spectrum, or are an adult on this site with CFS, or the parent of a recovered child or the grandparent of a recovered child…I have tried to gear this conference so that it is applicable to all of you.

I am planning a practitioners meeting from 5 to 7 on Friday, July 30th.  I will not have a PPT presentation, rather the focus is going to be on answering specific questions based on patient or case files. I am encouraging practitioners to bring files that they have questions on and I will have a projector available so we can all look at the data at the same time while I go through the file and help to illustrate how I trouble shoot a file based on individual specific questions and issues. At this point I know that many of the parents and adults on this site are probably not thrilled that I would start out with a focus on doctors and practitioners. However, if you will bear with me you will find that I plan to do the same for all of you later in the weekend. The idea is to deal with the practitioner/doctor questions upfront for two reasons…first, so that their questions on files will not take time away from your personal questions on your files later in the weekend. Second, it is important that the doctors who are using this protocol or planning to use this protocol have my input so that they are in a better position to help you. We need more doctors who are well versed in this protocol to help to guide you on a more individualized level.  Many of you have mentioned in the past that your doctors or practitioners are looking for more training in the program, so this is their opportunity. Friday night will be about getting specific patient file questions answered by me for any doctors/practitioners who are planning to attend. I would encourage your doctors to come to this as I do feel that it should be a tremendous help in implementing the program in their practice.

Saturday will feature a number of fifteen minute to thirty minute talks by me, as well as other doctors who have been using the protocol in their practice. I will intersperse my talks between those of the other invited speakers and plan to share a lot of new data. The idea of the shorter talks is so that you are able to take in the information in more bite size pieces. The talks will focus not only on autism but also on the use of this program for other aspects of health. Again, for those of you who have already recovered your children this is a way to start to think about how the program and your genetics play a role in your personal health. For those of you who are still focused on the recovery of your children there will be plenty of talks and time spent on that topic. And for those adults with CFS on this site we plan to have talks devoted specifically to that topic. So, the idea is to provide a well rounded program to interest all of you. I would seriously encourage anyone attending to have read the new book prior to the conference. I expect to build on prior concepts and talks and so the better your knowledge base the more you will get from my new PPT presentations.

Because I want to leave all day Sunday for Q and A from your files (bring your data with you!) we have a lot of material to cover on Saturday, so we will start early and will not break until lunch. We will be providing everyone a light brunch midday Saturday as I have noticed in the past that a heavy lunch makes for a longer, groggier afternoon. I have also noted that once people disperse for lunch it is often hard to get the afternoon session started on time. This way we will all be fed and ready to begin the afternoon talks on time so that we can break late afternoon for a walk through Boston, hopefully along a portion of the Freedom Trail (we are looking for sponsors for the walk and the walkers; the money raised will be donated to an organization that supports autism recovery). With the idea of recovery being more of a marathon than a sprint it seems only appropriate to have a ‘Walk for Recovery with Dr. Amy’. We will give you time to change into your “Walk for Recovery T shirt” (be sure to include the size you want on the registration form) and get on bus (we will provide the transportation) along with water and snacks (also provided) for a bit of energy before the walk. Our plan is to walk for 30 to 45 minutes and then end at Quincy Market so that people can stroll through the shops, get something to eat and then take the buses back to the hotel. We have a reception planned after the walk with desserts and a cash bar. The reception is casual attire and it is perfectly fine to go directly from the walk wearing your Walk to Recovery T shirt!!

We have some awesome entertainment planned for the reception, as well as a silent auction. The silent auction will include bids for a couple of private consultations with me on Sunday afternoon. Again, this is why you want to bring your file or your child’s complete file with you. It makes me feel awkward to auction off consultation time with me. However, I know that many of you want this service which I no longer provide, and where all of the money will be donated to autism I feel that I am again trying to be responsive to the feedback I have gotten from so many of you over the years.

Sunday is going to be all about Q and A. Unlike the standard Q and A format, I am encouraging people to bring their complete files and questions and I will do my utmost to answer them. At the moment we are planning to initially break into small groups led by the “cyber moms” to preview files and questions. Then the leaders of each group will pick questions that I will answer using the projector so that everyone can see the data I am looking at and understand the answer being given in light of the entire file. We will break for lunch and then do more of this type of Q and A based directly on questions from your files. Be sure to bring your files and have your questions ready so that you will be prepared with the data I need in order to answer your questions.

Due to the unique format we are not planning to video tape the conference. You need to feel open and comfortable bringing your complete files and I need to be able to put that data on the overhead projector as I go through the file without having to worry about covering up names etc. So in the interest of your personal privacy we will not be taping the conference. I know that some of you count on watching the DVD instead of traveling to the conference, so I am letting you know upfront that unlike our past conferences if you want to be a part of this you will need to be at the conference in person. For that reason I don’t believe we are going to set a cutoff limit for attendees but that could change depending on the response. I believe that we will open preregistration in the next week or so and again we do not plan to limit attendance at this point but that may change depending on the response that we get.

I am very excited about this format and about the ability to really interface so directly with so many of you. I love to walk and so I love the concept of the Walk for Recovery, and where it ties into the whole idea of a marathon and not a sprint it will be lovely. I look forward to seeing many of the familiar faces from past conferences and to personally meeting many of you who I know from your files but have yet to have the pleasure of meeting in person. I hope that you will all be as excited about this conference as I am!!

With love, hope and a hug,
Dr.Amy
