SAMe is an amino acid derivative naturally occurring in most tissues and body fluids. It is concentrated in the liver and brain.
It is used in the body in:
- Methylation pathways, being an important methyl donor required for synthesis of neurotransmitters, phospholipids and proteins.
- Neurotransmitters include serotonin, melatonin, dopamine and acetylcholine.
- Trans-sulphuration pathways, for the synthesis of the amino acids cysteine and glutathione.
